the nomination letterDesert View High School is a public high school in southern Tucson, Arizona. It opened in 1985 as part of the Sunnyside Unified School District and has grades 9-12. The school is ranked 125th among Arizona high schools. Desert View High School is of low socio-economic status, with 90% of students at the poverty level.
Although the school is highlighted first in the district, it is often treated differently. Different from its sister school, Desert View lacks the traditional winning aspect. In the 1980s and 1990s, Desert View High School sports were successful, with several state championships. Unfortunately, the wins decline, especially in football. In 2011, Desert View High School decided it was done with the losing record and hired Robert Bonillas, a former University of Arizona linebacker under Coach Dick Tomey. Robert had spent eight years at the sister high school in the district as an assistant coach. After gaining experience and learning about the community, he took on the challenge to ascend Desert View High School Football to where it was before. When Coach Bonillas took over the program, it was unsuccessful. The team was skeletal, and so were various areas that needed improvement. These areas included the weight room, updated equipment, uniforms, and improved wins and losses. During the first years as head coach, Desert View struggled. The football team numbers were low in membership, and the athletes were learning to become student-athletes. There was a lot more than just learning football fundamentals. Coach Bonillas and his staff had to come together to develop a plan for the student-athletes. There was enormous work to complete, and it had to happen quickly. Fortunately, the ability to upgrade the weight room came with a district bond. The team also began to come together. After two seasons of 2-8 & 0-10, the team improved and doubled their wins. Two years later, the team won enough games to get into the first round of the Arizona Interscholastic Athletics Playoffs. A quick turnaround was created through hard work and dedication. Desert View Football has continued to be successful. What was once the easiest team to beat on a Friday night is now recognized as a strong playoff contender. Although several goals have been met, one still needs to. The team is in desperate need of uniforms. With the lack of funding for public funding for schools and override/bond money running out, the team needs a new set of uniforms. The last time that uniforms were purchased was before the pandemic in 2016. We received one new jersey and new pants. We ask that you consider our program and select Desert View Football as one of your recipients.

the nomination letterI am the girls and boys coach for tennis at Canyon Hills High School. This was my first year with the tennis program in which we have done amazing things. For example; last year only 9 girls were playing and now I have 21. With the boys only 7 players and now 15. We are in need for more uniforms or even spirit gear to have pride. The school did a rebrand in 2020 in which they ordered vague uniforms for all the sports. During the girl season they had to keep sharing the uniforms as we were short on inventory. The girls are amazing but new uniforms that state they are a tennis team would give us that mental edge. Thank you.
Coach Caylor THE NOMINATION LETTERMy name is Santiago Rocha I am a teacher at Orange and I am currently working on my credential to become a Special Education Teacher. Additionally, I recently became the Head Football Coach for Orange Glen High School. I am an alumni of Orange Glen, played football, basketball, baseball and continued my football journey at the University of La Verne. I am from the Escondido community and I am proud to give back to the place that had a profound impact on my life.
I would like to nominate our Orange Glen football team for the 1morewin opportunity. Our team is made up of dedicated and passionate young athletes from low-income neighborhoods who have a love for the game but don't always have the resources to fully participate. One of the things I feel we have lacked in the past, was the Orange Glen football gear (spirit packs, shirts, shorts etc.). I feel that in order to generate buzz for the program and motivation for some of these young men who have/have not played football before is help create a sense of pride with the gear that they are able to wear to work out, play 7v7's, or even walk around the community in. Our team has faced many challenges this past year, a league championship season wiped away from a technicality and some players transferring out. Despite these obstacles, our players have shown incredible resilience and determination, still showing up to lifting/conditioning with a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard. The 1morewin opportunity could provide our team with the resources that I will feel will help us succeed both on and off the field, instilling important values such as teamwork, discipline, and determination. By supporting Orange Glen Football, you are not only investing in the development of young athletes but also in the future of our community. Orange Glen Football provides a positive outlet for our players, keeping them off the streets and focused on achieving their goals. The Orange Glen community is a family. The staff, administration and parents care about each other here and I know that with your help, we can continue to provide a safe and supportive environment for our players to grow and thrive, while also promoting a sense of unity and pride within our community. Thank you for considering our nomination and for supporting our team in reaching our full potential. Santiago Rocha |
